 The Malayan Plaza

The Malayan Plaza (14.586491000000027,121.060045) is a building of mixed function: a residential condominium and a hotel.

The building is forty-storey high (145 meters), with helipad, and with six basement floors.

The structure is made of structural steel elements with shear walls.  Thus, it is a Steel Moment Resisting Frame (SMRF).

The Architect of the building is Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum.

Originally was supposed to be 50 storeys.

It now welcomes the world as a property managed by the Quantum Group.

In the point of view of a structural engineer, the weights or loads considered here varies; thus, the type of occupancy will be different.

So to appease the engineer’s difficulty in predicting the building’s response, he must have the data that verifies his analytical model responses to that of measurements by an accelerograph.

In the occupant’s viewpoint, the building must be instrumented since it is located approximately 1.0 km from the West Valley Fault, which is the expected to have a M7.2 earthquake as mentioned in the MMEIRS 2004.

This building has earthquake recording instruments (ERI) installed at the basement no. 6, twentieth (20th) floor, and thirty-ninth (39th) floor.  The building is now being monitored 24/7.  The building's response due to recent earthquakes, since it was installed last year, 2019, has been in the monitoring of their command center.  All the data pertinent to structural vibration that can be used by their assigned structural engineer is available through the web portal, which includes a structural vibration report where its structural health index is supplied.  So anytime that the building official will ask the building / property manager for a report, it is ready in PDF format, in a matter of seconds.  This is powered by USHER ERI MAX, a product of research and development funded by the country's Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) with the academic institution, Mapua University.

Last November 9 to 10, 2012, some of the distinguished and respected civil engineering educators from Kenya, Japan, Indonesia, United States of America (Fil-Am), New Zealand (Kinoy), and Filipinos (Ilocanos, Capampangans, Bicolanos, Tagalogs, Ethic groups from Visayan and Mindanao Islands) gathered at one of the auditoriums and function rooms of the Brother Andrew Gonzales Hall of De La Salle University - Manila for the first International Conference on Civil Engineering Education (ICCEE) that has the theme "Addressing Global Challenges in Civil Engineering Education."

Our paper, co-authored with Engr. Orlando P. Lopez (my CE Director at Far Eastern University - East Asia College), entitled "USING INTERNET AND SOCIAL NETWORKING TOOLS IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION" was included as one of the plenary session presentations and lauded as "great" by my former professor, Dr. Danilo C. Terante, an Associate Professor from DLSU-Manila who heads the Hydraulics and Water Resources Division, who himself was also one of the Plenary Session presentors, with the paper entitled "MULTI CRITERIA DECISION ANALYSIS: LAND-USE STRATEGY FOR WATERSHED MANAGEMENT".

ACEEP President,
Dr. Danilo Cualteros Terante
It was my dream to present my paper on stage, fronting such respectful audience, that includes my former professors from DLSU-M (undergraduate & graduate), UP Diliman (graduate), and colleagues from different universities.  I was positioned as the first speaker after the scheduled coffee break and after the last three Keynote Speakers who are Kenyan, Japanese, and Indonesian.

What made it memorable is that i wasn't able to present the research side of my paper, that is, presenting the charts of my survey data analysis results because of lack of time.  My mentor, Dr. Andres Winston C. Oreta, who happened to be the Conference Over-all Chairman, said that there were lots of pauses in my presentation, just like forgetting some terms, and looking from my laptop to read aloud a passage.

But the "meat" of my presentation was presented well, that is, the different features of the social networking site called FACEBOOK, and how it was interactively woven with internet, software application, and multimedia tools.  In fact, I also showed the result of a case study or application of that interactivity feature.  But the moderator of our plenary session group named as Information and Computing Technology, Engr. Alden Paul Balili, an Assistant Professor of the host university, said that it was a nice presentation that not only CE educators but also other teachers would emulate.  He also added in the form of a question, since no one from the audience would ask one, that such endeavor is only a SUPPLEMENT to a face-to-face traditional form of holding lecture classes, inside a conducive classroom.

In a nutshell, the conference was a very nice experience for a budding researcher like me.  Hopefully, I could attend or present a paper or two in foreign lands.

INTERACTIVITY IN FACEBOOK

Did it happen to you?

5AM, without any sleep, your group is about to defend thesis and on your way to school, to submit your prototype, sh*t happens...you'll have your final examination in strength of materials.
my CEM303 V92 class (1T SY2012 2013)
An EcE student solving manually on the board a problem in STREMA that verifies the MatLab script output

This scenario was only a part of an almost MMK scene in my CEM303 (Strength of Materials) class, where there is only one among nineteen students who is not graduating this trimester.

To be pro-active with this, with the good advise of my ever supportive undergraduate professor and mentor, i submitted a paper to the International Conference in Civil Engineering Education, entitled "Using Internet and Social Networking Tools in Engineering Education."

The problem is already there, and what should I do but, do something about what is at hand.
FACEBOOK.
the perennial problem of a faculty member is that when they are being "unguarded"-ly criticized by his students.
(As of press time, FB is now being trended by the country's CYBERCRIME Law which somehow makes this paper interesting.  To whom? not sure yet. )

These are the things that I put into writing, with my paper, of course:
1. FACEBOOK acted as the stimulus to the interactivity of the internet tools such as, filesharing sites, educational webpages, office package software applications, a programming/math software, web-based multimedia, and FB's ever changing features.
2. Pedagogical Constructs were validated through a 29-respondent survey.  It shows a very high 4.93 weighted mean of the five-point Likert Scale.

Here are some figures i used in my paper.
an example of a MS Visio Drawing posted in one of my FB group wall.

a captured typical FB group wall, that was discussed each numbered feature of the webpage.

the paradigm of interactivity of FB to some internet tools that I used.

In a nutshell, this paper has taught me to explore more in the realm of Information Technology for greater possibilities in reaching out our youth understand not only the content of our subject/course, but also the value of meaningful inter-activeness in whatever endeavor they will be into.
With this,
I hope to see you on November 9-10, 2012 at De La University - Manila, Philippines
for the ICCEE (Int'l Conference in Civil Eng'g Education) 2012!
MABUHAY!
